Grand Theft Auto | Cinema
Ron Howard leaves the role of the clumsy but nice Ricky Cunningham (“Happy Days”) and runs to Las Vegas with his girlfriend who has just stolen her father’s Rolls Royce, seriously intent on preventing the two from getting married. From the first minutes of the film it’s all about car thefts, accidents and tragicomic situations that lead the many characters to the hunt for the lavish reward promised for those who manage to stop Sam and Paula before the fateful “yes”.
TITLE: Grand Theft Auto
YEAR: 1977
DIRECTED BY: Ron Howard
LENGHT: 1h 24min
GENRE: action, comedy
“Grand Theft Auto” is an hour and a half of car chases on the edge of the grotesque and beyond. There is an immediate sympathy for the two protagonists and the comedy is frantically told resulting fun, even if not memorable. Unlike advertised by the posters of the time when the most prestigious cars were declared to be destroyed, for the most part it is up to standard American sedans, but it is still a pleasant film to spend an evening in the company with nothing challenging to tear some laughter. There are some interesting cameos, but everything is obviously focused on the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. Ron Howard, director and co-star, shows his talent in playing a different role than usual and brings with him Marion Ross (Ricky’s mother in “Happy Days”), in this case mother of the promised bridgegroom of his beloved Paula.
