120 Years of Renault – Renault 5 (1974)
Having rolled out almost 9 million units could give an idea of the relevance that the Renault 5 has held for the French brand, but in reality that of the 5 was not simply a matter of sales or commercial affection. The small hatchback marked an era, reinvigorated the brand and managed to win the favor of countless customers. Initially born as a car to simplify everyday life, always among the main objectives for Renault, it has been able to win the female audience thanks to its youthful look and the practicality of the tailgate and the large luggage compartment, which did not affected the small size of just 3 and a half meters length. It was also appreciated by male customers thanks to its sporting flavor, then watered by the subsequent versions more directed towards a deeper driving pleasure.
In 1974, two different versions were presented, the “L”, with engines from 782cc and 845cc respectively and the “TL” with a 956cc4-cylinder. The following year the “LS” arrived, presenting an 85-hp 1.2cc and a richer aesthetic. Then, the motorsport successes of the ’75 and ’76 seasons led to the birth of the Renault 5 Alpine, first with a naturally aspirated engine and then a turbocharged one. From that moment on the history of the Renault 5 has written important pages for many drivers, but above all for driving enthusiasts.
