120 Years of Renault – Renault 8 Gordini (1970)
Who ever said that a “common” car cannot be fun? It is probably what Amédée Gordini thought when he turned the Renault 8 into that little blue bomb with white stripes, the so-called Gordini, a car that gave way to a legacy that Renault keeps alive today, with the RS declinations of its hatchbacks. The 8 Gordini, however, had a dual objective, in fact in addition to offering exciting performance thanks to a 1.2cc 4-cylinder with 110 horses, aimed at a young audience which could finally enjoy driving pleasure, without necessarily having an ocean deep wallet.
Rear-wheel drive, 5-speed manual transmission (introduced in ’66) and a weight of just 860kg made it capable of reaching a top speed of 175 kph and being agile even on the most demanding roads. Renault had taken another important step in the automobile world, thus bringing entertainment to everyone.
