120 Years of Renault – Renault Type B (1899)
The year following the birth of the very first Renault – the Type A – Louis Renault applied an innovation that many of us take for granted nowadays. The 1899 Type B was in fact equipped with a roof, in order to offer greater comfort and convenience to the driver and his passenger, making the small car able to be used even in the rain or cold weather.
A very simple line, developed with coachbuilder Labourdette, but which gave life to one of the first sedans in history, without counting the use of solutions that were going to update those of the Type A, such as the direct drive gearbox , which guaranteed a better efficiency and noise reduction. The Type B weighed just 360kg and was powered by a small single-cylinder 450cc with 2.75 horsepower. Its design still remains unbelievable today, with a length reduced to the minimum and a height emphasized at the service of the occupants.
