Are you in the mood for a light story with funny situations, cool cars, and no intention of fleaking about the laws of physics? Then “Asphalt Burning” could really be the movie you are looking for. Norwegian film released in 2020, it’s a nice meeting point between an action film and a comedy with situations at the limit of the grotesque created by a singular gang of friends having to face a journey from Norway to Germany in order to regain the runaway love of the protagonist Roy, a muscle car fanatic.
TITLE: Asphalt Burning
YEAR: 2020
DIRECTED BY: Hallvard Bræin
LENGHT: 1h 40 min
GENRE: action, comedy
“Asphalt Burning” should not be taken seriously, since its goal is to entertain and in this it succeeds very well. After the first 5-10 minutes, we immediately start with a spectacular climb along the hairpin bends of the Trollstigen and one of the protagonist cars appears: a Techart GTstreet RS, which changes the plan and gives way to a succession of sensational events that take place in the next 100 minutes of film. Despite a few clichés, the movie never falls into the trap of emulation but rather maintains a precise identity and without even realizing it makes you forgive the flaws and mistakes, including those that without too many questions upset the laws of physics. With his ’67 Mustang and old and new friends in tow, Roy reaches the Nürburgring for the final challenge, which does not miss the opportunity for a further adrenaline boost. Without going to reveal too much details that could ruin some of the funniest scenes, I suggest giving “Asphalt Burning” a chance, because although it does not represent a milestone in contemporary cinema, it is undoubtedly an excellent way to spend a cheerful evening in front of the TV screen.
