BMW 1M Coupe: Master of Performance
Referring to the 1 M Coupe, its name has not been specifically overturned in order to go drawing a delicate heritage, such as that of the legendary mid-rear-engined M1 with gullwing doors, but imagine that a few months after its production started, BMW had already sold out all the models of the smallest M cars ever produced. Press played a key role, immediately falling in love with it and praising the qualities of the small Bavarian two doors for its great quality and its strong versatility.
Under the body of a 1 Series coupe under steroids, we find a 6 cylinder in-line 3.0cc. With the help of two turbos this engine has a lot of torque (500Nm, more than the previous gen M3) and is able to output to the rear wheels 340hp, ie the power of the glorious E46 M3. But there is a substantial difference here and it’s the size; in fact, the 1 M is shorter and lighter and this results in a deadly handling and a crazy grip, that make you feel like you’ve made the right decision by opting for a couple of cylinders more. The 19” alloy wheels fitted under the widened wheel arches and the dual exhaust with four pipes spits out an angry roar, which never bothers when it is not specifically called into the game. This little one is probably the closest object to the very first series M3, in size, shape and character. Extremely fun and entertaining on track, without ever being infamous assassin towards the driver, rather it is very communicative and direct, while on everyday’s roads is quite comfortable, with a cabin sober as usual and in which nothing is missing. This is one of the few cars that satisfied us in every way, from its muscular but not overwhelming shape, the sensational performance (0-100 kph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 kph), to the possibility of a perfect daily life-sharing, looking parking in the city center, or even better trashing it on some twisty and winding roads. Impossible not to love an instant classic like this. To have at any cost!
