Cars And Films | All Movies Deserve The Right Car
CARS AND FILMS
MOVING PICTURES
Interview by Marco Rallo / Photos Andy Williams
You gotta love a movie starring a great car. You have to. And yes, maybe it is just for the fact that your heart beats faster as soon as you find four-wheels action on the big screen. In cinema history we had iconic actors and epic adventures, but when it comes to a good chase, a road trip or something involving a rumbling engine and a plot that can also revolve around a sports car or even better a classic one, it all assumes a different taste. We find ourselves home, no matter what. We completely dive into the story and connect the whole picture with the shape of that very vehicle, because it could also be a van after all. We had countless movies featuring cars that have become immortal, up to identifying the same film or a whole genre and Jesús Prudencio decided to make available the chance to frame our favorite characters with incredibly detailed designs. He created Cars and Films and it looks like we’ve found how to cover the walls of our offices and homes then. So we met for a chat about his works and how it all started.
What’s your name? And where are you from?
My name is Jesús Prudencio, I’m a graphic designer and illustrator from Badajoz, currently living in Seville, Spain. I have a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Seville. As freelance I have worked for advertising agencies such as Arnold, DDB, Tribal, Blue Hive or Metric Design and in various magazines such as Monocle, GQ, Le Parisien Week-End or the magazine M of the newspaper Le Monde.
How did your passion for cars started?
I’ve loved cars ever since I was a child. I had a pedal car, a Beetle convertible, and I also had a lot of miniature cars. And as for my passion for cinema, it started with going to the cinema with my brothers and sisters or my parents to watch films.
Tell us a bit about “Cars and Films”
I was very surprised that in some movies the vehicles had a big role in the film. It occurred to me to create a series with that common element, and so I joined two things that I like, cars and cinema. That’s how the Cars And Films project was born. It is a personal interpretation of the films and series that make up our collective imagination. By representing the cars that appear in them, I wanted to pay homage to cinema and cars.
What was your first ever movie poster?
The first poster I made was the car that appears in the film “Pulp Fiction”, a ‘74 Chevrolet Nova. From there I started to draw others and I saw that it could work as a series of posters.
Can you take us through the process behind the creation of one of your poster?
I usually document myself on the first car that I’ll draw, sometimes drawing a previous sketch and other directly start working in Adobe Illustrator with my graphics tablet. Then I experiment with a colour palette according to the car I represent.
Is there a great car in a bad movie?
Yes, of course. Some people won’t consider it a bad film, but I’m not a big fan of a saga that features a lot of muscle cars, but it’s clear that it’s got some great cars in it.
And what about a great movie that deserved a better car?
There are great films where perhaps a better car should have been chosen.
If you had to choose your Top 5, what would it be?
Difficult choice, but if I had to choose, in my Top 5 would be the Aston Martin from Goldfinger, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the Ford Mustang from Bullitt, the Cadillac Meteor from Ghostbusters and the Checker from Taxi Driver.
Seems like you’ve watched a lot of movies. What other kind of films you like? Maybe without cars as main characters.
Yes, I like cinema very much, although now with the pandemic I have hardly been to the cinema. But I do watch quite a lot of films on streaming platforms. I really like films by Billy Wilder, Wes Anderson, Michel Gondry, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Wim Wenders, Pedro Almodóvar and Krzysztof Kieślowski, among others, but also Italian directors such as Federico Fellini and Paolo Sorrentino.
Plans for 2022 then?
To continue working on what I like. For the time being Cars And Films will continue to grow, and maybe soon I will start another new project.
I wanted to send a greeting to all the readers of Auto Class Magazine.
