COL D’ALLOS
COL D’ALLOS
The Col d’Allos is one of those hill roads that are much more than you might think by driving it without paying due attention. In fact, if the northern portion becomes mainly narrow to the point of forcing to stop in case of traffic coming from the opposite direction, once you reach the top and exceed two thousand meters – the summit is located at 2,274 meters – you feel the impression of not having arrived yet. The narrow road created close to the rock that rises and then abandons the almost claustrophobic sense that has accompanied us up here, drastically gives way to a huge valley overlooking the southern slope, looking over La Faux d’Allos.
Location: Barcelonnette – Allos
Type: mountain road
Length: 36 km
Elevation: 2.250 m
Famous stage for the Tour de France and for its proximity to the origins of the Verdon river, the Col d’Allos is a road that must be approached calmly, savoring every single curve, even before the landscape around takes on the more traditional appearance of the alpine pass you think you are facing, especially having simply taken a look at the images depicting the very summit. However, do not be intimidated by the narrow width of the road, because it still remains a fundamental connection point between Haute Provence and the Maritime Alps, guaranteeing a unique experience if you can drive at dawn or just when the sun is about to set.
