COL DE L’ESPIGOULIER
Located a few kilometers east of Marseille, the Col de l’Espigoulier is one of those curvy roads that is apparently not worth a long journey here, at least until you have had the opportunity to drive along its bends. About thirty kilometers that start from Gemenos and reach Auriol without even touching 1,000 meters of altitude – we stop at 723 -, but with a high adrenaline rate offered by the numerous curves on the south side.
Location: Gémenos – Auriol (FRA)
Type: panoramic road
Length: 25km
Elevation: 725 m
The road seems to have been designed on purpose to allow the fun granted by the numerous turns, as well as that which concerns high cornering speeds, it is not by chance that it is a renowned location for true driving enthusiasts, but also passionate cyclists, without forgetting the famous scene of the film ” Fantômas”, set right here. Taking into consideration the main bank, the southern one, after 8 very close switchbacks there is a faster stretch that again introduces a high rate of slower curves, placed just before the top of the hill, where unfortunately there is little useful space to stop the car and admire the view. The north side is shorter and undoubtedly less intense, but by then you will have already really understood how much the Col de l’Espigoulier deserved to be included in this list.
