COL DE PORTET
COL DE PORTET
We assume that the Col de Portet may not yet have ended up on your radar under “Alpine passes to drive with my supercar”, since its conformation and the type of asphalt is certainly not typical of the most suitable sports car-friendly mountain passes. A dutiful parenthesis aside, the Col de Portet, located in the Hautes-Pyrénées department, is a sought-after destination for those who love outdoor sports, both in summer and in winter and a meeting point for the almost infinite paths to travel by mountain bike or hiking.
Location: Espiaube – Col de Portet
Type: mountain road
Length: 10 km
Elevation: 2.215 m
2,215 meters above sea level and a healthy dose of hairpin bends represent the road that leads from Espiaube to the top of the hill, where there is a large clearing to accommodate or temporarily pull over the car. At this point, if you decide to continue west and taking into account the different turns ahead, you need to moderate your pace as the roadway becomes narrower and in some places the asphalt may have suffered the consequences of a harsh winter. Provided you don’t find yourself with a car with an extremely stiff set-up, you will however have to deal with many other bends and a landscape capable of surprising at every turn, without forgetting the many lakes that can be reached within a few half hours, namely the Lac de l’Oule, d’Orédon, de Cap-de-Long, d’Aumar and the wonderful Lac d’Aubert.
