Everyday Rally Car
With the beginning of the 90s, Ford needed to offer the public a worthy replacement for the great Sierra Cosworth, available first with rear wheel drive and then in all-wheel-drive configuration with the three volumes model. Devoted mostly to track races, the Sierra was replaced by the Escort and of course, the Company, which was very focused on motorsport, didn’t wait to produce the RS Cosworth version, giving the Group A of the World Rally Championship, a ‘competitive car and at the same time, a new model towards which leading the dreams of the young of the 90s, that were looking to own a rally car for everyday’s drive. Produced since 1992, picked up the legacy of the Sierra Cosworth, evolving it with even better stunning performance. Under a car body virtually identical to the one that you were able to see during the stages of the Rally Championship, the Escort offered a 2.0cc turbo engine with 217 horses that gave power to both axles, thus ensuring not only a good acceleration from standing still, but also a remarkable grip. The huge rear spoiler, the famous “fin”, ensured further stability as the speed increased and it is useless to tell you that was deeply loved by enthusiasts of this car, enjoying the view in the rearview mirror of that unique shape, always there to remind you that you were behind the wheel of something very bad and angry. The most important point in favor of the Escort Cosworth is discovered precisely by driving it, which as in a novel of the past, alternates between a pleasant living with the driver (and passengers) and a frantic search of the limits of the car and of those who govern it. These cars have been brought to disburse even 1.000 horses and I certainly do not stand to explain what the consequences are, but in its original version, even after 12 years since its inception, there still remains a car exciting to see, drive and above all to live. I do not think you find an evergreen look like this in more than a handful of other cars, especially those which we see in present days. An interior almost identical to the typical Escort that your uncle could own is perhaps the only flaw of a car that has been my childhood myth.
Like me, our friend Ivan, who writes us from Spain, shares a special love for the “Cossie” and tells us how his model (which you see in the picture) accompanied him everywhere for the past three years. Registered in late 1992 and finely tuned by TTD Motorsport up to deliver 330 horses, this blue Escort Cosworth means a lot for him and for his wife Silvia, both big fans of rally. In Asturias, where the couple live, thanks to a great passion for racing, it is not difficult to find a car linked to the world of rally and Ivan tells us that whenever he happens to see a car like his, a greeting is a must, because it feels like being part of the same big family. Nothing is more true, because even today, you still feel the same emotions that you were feeling years ago when this car was brand new.
