Family Killer
“There are cars and there are devastating weapons ready to give fun and a lot of sideways to the lucky drivers at the wheel. The Mercedes in question is deeply vulgar and exaggerated that even today, after all these years, we have not found anything like it in the segment of performance sedans.
Sure, now it’s easy to find faster cars, also with diesel engines, engineering has made great strides and then the 230 horses of the Evo II may seem a shy number, but not at all. Despite in the cabin it doesn’t lack of any kind of comfort, like leather seats, which are sporty also in the back , radio, air conditioning and … stop, this Merc does not weigh more than 1340kg and with me on board slightly surpass 1400, almost as much as a Lancer Evo. Power is not exaggerated and does not make it a lightning car, but it is still able to accomplish the 0-100kph in 7.1 seconds, reaching up to 250 kph (as every AMG Mercedes of today with the electronic limiter on); anyway this is not the important figure, in fact it has a fantastic handling, thanks to the rear-wheel drive that is able to ground the torque and a frame that makes you play with the car putting it sideways just enough to drive you into the next corner flat out. Going fast it looks even lighter and absolutely not affected by the size of a family car: that’s what amazed me about the 190 Evo: an aesthetically extreme car that surely will appeal to younger people, with that JDM’s flavor wing, that suffocated roar of an engine which has so much to say, even more than twenty years after its birth. I had never driven one until now, but after spending an entire afternoon at the wheel of this creature, I am convinced that there are cars with less than 300 horsepower, with fewer cylinders and much less technological than the ones we are used to drive today, capable of excite and entertain us like children. If they only had made some more, this is one of those cars that I would like to see every morning before going to work. Just looking at its back puts you in a good mood”.
