Having first driven the entry level and then the sportier ST version, it’s now the turn of that model that combines the two worlds enhancing them thanks to an aesthetic set-up that gives the ST-Line the Vignale signature. For years, the latter makeover on Ford models has always meant greater refinement in character, with details that are sometimes really able to change the stylistic features that characterize a specific model and the best seller Puma is no exception. In the wake of the extraordinary sales results and a segment – that of the B-SUV/Crossover – which sees the streets providentially invaded by this feline that despite the transformation compared to the previous generation has also been able to please worldwide press, the ST-Line Vignale presents itself as the notorious “total package”, without giving up the panache of one of the most surprising 3 cylinders on the list.
Let’s start then, with the Vignale signature that blends well with the sportiness accentuated by the ST-Line which includes bumpers, side skirts and rear spoilers that are pronounced exactly like the 200 horsepower ST. We then have dedicated 18-inch alloy wheels and chrome plating on the bumpers, mirrors and especially on the front grille, the point where the car is more recognizable. In this “Gray Matter” color, the ribs stand out even more than usual, perhaps even ticking off the panoramic sunroof, which is a € 1,000 optional. As for the cockpit, leather is the code. There is soft leather everywhere: on the steering wheel, on the dashboard, on the armrest and of course on the comfortable seats with heating as standard. The environment is substantially similar to that of any other Puma, but the soft set-up in Comfort mode manages to elevate one of the two fundamental aspects of this model.
The second aspect, as previously anticipated, is the sportiness offered by the turbocharged in-line 3-cylinder, a little gem of just 999 cc which here delivers 155 horsepower (+30 compared to the entry level and -45 compared to the ST), which can communicate with the front axle via a 6-speed manual gearbox, or a 7-speed automatic like the one of our test, in this case available on request for €1,500. The automatic transmission works well regardless of the driving mode you select, but by setting it to Sport, managing the gears through the paddles on the steering wheel is much more engaging. After all, the settings of the car and therefore also of the engine equipped with mild-hybrid technology become sharper and the compact size of the Puma allows respectable performance, even if more filtered than its performance-focused sister.
When you need to drive the ST-Line Vignale taking advantage of its more comfortable side, the on-board multimedia technology and level 2 driver assistance systems are able to meet any need, while four people comfortably find space on board, without forgetting the presence of the very useful MegaBox obtained under the traditional luggage compartment. With a three-cylinder and a weight that does not exceed a ton and a half, fuel consumption also draws a pleased smile on your face, with average figures of about 4.4 l/100 km declared by the house that come quite realistic, especially if you drive the Puma without necessarily fund the 155 horses at your disposal. The maximum torque of 240 Nm facilitates both on b-roads and along motorway sections, revealing a small engine still capable of providing the driver with remarkable flexibility, in particular between 1,700 and 3,000 revs.
There is no doubt that the latest generation Ford Puma is a product worthy of your attention, but it rarely happens that in a range with three engines giving shape to so different solutions, each of them is nevertheless able to excel. If you’re prone to adrenaline there is no need to argue and just go for the 200 horsepower ST, but the ST-Line Vignale is the perfect solution for those who do not make speed a top priority, but still seek a bright and characterful crossover. Yes, if needed, this suit and tie Puma knows how to use its claws.
