Gran Sasso
The Gran Sasso d’Italia is the highest Apennine mountain massif of the entire Country. With a maximum elevation that touches 3,000 meters and a road that offers wide valleys surrounded by mountains that only await to let you dive through their gigantic beauty, the road we suggest to follow is a ring of over 250 kilometers that starts from Montereale, crosses L’Aquila, Santo Stefano di Sessanio and focuses its attention on the stage that leads to Campo Imperatore, the authentic beating heart of the area. The beauty of the many villages is bewitching and the continuous presence of the rocky massif is the constant that will accompany you throughout the entire journey, therefore passing Isola del Gran Sasso d’Italia, Montorio al Vomano, Fano Adriano and arriving in Campotosto, giving priority to the western shore of the same lake, without a doubt the most panoramic part. However, if you have a few extra hours, be sure to drive along the entire perimeter of the lake, you won’t regret that.
Location: Abruzzo, Italy
Type: mountain road
If Campo Imperatore is able to steal your soul for the perfect combination of a wide road, mainly in good condition, and a horizon made of rocky peaks, during the winter season Campotosto adds the charm of its frozen lake, making this place in central Italy an authentic heaven for mountain roads adventurers.
