Land Rover Defender: It’s Back!
We were all thinking that the myth of the British off-road vehicle par excellence was destined to be kept by the guardians of old glories and instead, in Frankfurt, Land Rover presented what represents the fifth generation Defender. The official launch is scheduled for the beginning of 2020 with two variants available: the Defender 90 (432 cm long and a 5/6 seat passenger compartment) and the Defender 110 (479 cm long and with 5/6/7 seats). Next we’ll have the Defender 130 (510 cm long and able to accommodate up to 8 people). If aesthetically they have been maintained a design characterized by square lines, the one thing that radically changes is the true soul of the English off-road vehicle, which for the first time has an aluminum monocoque. This represents a point in favor of the structural rigidity of the car and will also improve a better ride comfort when you will not necessarily be in some mud pool two meters deep.
Even on the inside the cabin cuts with its past as we find a contemporary environment, with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, a touch screen display in the center of the dashboard and a greater attention to detail, an aspect that on previous generations was never at the center of attention for the more traditional Defender customer. As standard we will have an 8-speed automatic transmission with reduced gears and permanent all-wheel drive equipped with Terrain Response 2, while air suspensions will be available as well, so as to vary ground clearance at your command. The first engines that will hit the roads – and certainly not just paved ones – will be the diesel 2.0 SD4 with 200 or 240 hp, a petrol 2.0 Si4 with 300 hp and an in-line 6-cylinder, a 3-liter coming with 400 hp with a 48 Volt mild hybrid system. Prices starting from € 44,600 for the 90 version and from € 50,460 for the 110.
