Lexus LS 400 | Japan’s Finest Sedan

Japanese cars, with the exception of pick-ups and SUVs, have always been famous for their extremely small size that allowed for a more agile movement in the busy metropolis. But the Lexus’ vision, the luxury division of the Toyota brand, thinks differently and in 1989 gives life to the LS 400, the first model developed on its own and which would have given way to what in a few years has become a brand with a very distinct range that does not represent just a more luxurious variant of Toyota models. But the secret behind the success of the LS 400 are not only its dimensions, so to speak anomalous compared to the vast majority of cars born in Japan, but the innovations that made it a point of reference also overseas, especially taking into account a purchase price significantly lower compared to its direct rivals.
The LS 400 was aiming high and the risk of putting Mercedes and BMW in its sights would have foreseen only two scenarios: a stunning success, or a total disaster. Providentially, sales immediately marked figures ranging from 21,000 to 42,000 units per year, making the LS 400 a point of reference in a segment that made innovation and attention to detail one of its strengths. With a three-box car body and 5 meters in length, the Lexus offered ample space on board, with particular attention to the rear occupants, soft leather seats and finishes that left nothing to chance.
Among the many innovations, the LS 400 introduced heated seats, auto-off headlamps, power adjustable shoulder belts and a digital display for air conditioning readouts. There was also no lack of attention to driving, offered by a refined set-up that allowed to travel for hundreds of kilometers without even realizing it. Despite the rather boxy shape, the aerodynamic coefficient was really low – even for the period – and the fact of equipping it with a generous 4-liter V8 increased the prestige of a model that knows no half measures. Rear-wheel drive only, 4-speed automatic transmission and 245 horsepower made the LS 400 a luxurious sedan perfectly suited for city coexistence, as well as long journeys and even if you are comfortably pampered by leather and cutting-edge on board technology, the place everyone wanted to be was at the wheel. It is incredible to think that such a car can be bought today for just € 10,000.
