The new era for Maserati begins with the MC20, a completely new model which for the Trident means a clear step into the future, a leap forward that introduces a pack of new models that will renew the entire price list. There was no better way to do it, than with a car that embodies the supercar image, with the engine located in mid-rear position, a tarmac-eater which boasts features that are ready to set the new benchmark for the segment, not to mention that it is a model completely produced in Modena. The MC20, which pays its name to the racing department – it will soon be a protagonist in motorsport – and to the year of its debut (2020, right), features numerous mechanical innovations, such as the new twin-turbo V6, an engine so glorious that deserved a name, Nettuno. Capable of delivering 630 horsepower and 730 Nm of torque, it guarantees ballistic performance like 2.9 seconds for going from 0-100 kph, 8.8 seconds for 0-200 kph and a top speed of 325 per hour. Nothing is left to chance and in fact it is on display under the lexan panel which, thanks to an original idea in the design phase, recreates the stylized Trident logo above the same engine compartment.
To make the engine special we have a pre-chamber combustion system with double spark plug, a technology developed in Formula 1 and now available on a road car for the first time. Also introduced here there’s a double clutch 8-speed gearbox, which will be able to guarantee instantaneousness while shifting and the ability to manage a similar power, obviously distributed only on the rear axle. Double-wishbone suspension, Brembo brakes and a lot of visible carbon fiber, to remind you how the MC20 is basically built around a very light carbon fiber tub that allows to limit the weight to 1,470 kg.
And then, after tasting such an engineering triumph, it is impossible not to dwell on the purity of its lines, the perfect tribute to a modern icon like the MC12, but which despite offering ideal performance for attacking the race track, will be perfectly at ease on road as well, thanks to the different driving modes that can be selected from the special selector located on the central tunnel: GT, Sport, Corsa, Wet and finally ESC Off. The passenger compartment, mainly focused towards the driver, also remains clean and free of distractions, with two digital screens – one in the middle from which to manage the infotainment and multimedia system and one in front of the driver – through which to keep an eye on the most important things happening while at the wheel of the jewel that for Maserati marks the beginning of a new era, the perfect bridge between past and present, with the aim to conquer the future. With these premises, we have no doubts that it will succeed.
