ONLY THE BEST | The Very Best Of Our 2021
At the end of the calendar – we know – the air starts smelling of that typical Christmas atmosphere and for us it means checking what the whole year has brought, which for the record was unfortunately still spent in the maximum alert caused by the health emergency that has been haunting us since early last year. Despite this, we were able to complete our editorial plan, accomplish the 3 driving tours we wanted to host and try a large array of cars, not just exotic sports cars, but also SUVs, hot-hatches and 100% electric models. Let’s not dwell any further and while waiting to uncork the bottle wishing you a full throttle 2022, let’s go over those cars that this year we have decided to award as the best in their respective categories.

THE SPORTS CAR | FERRARI ROMA & ALFA ROMEO GIULIA QUADRIFOGLIO
Dream cars as we know it always remain the same: flashy looks, mighty engine usually positioned at the back and space rocket performance. Making an excellent sports car that is less self-referential is much more difficult because it needs to be usable in everyday life, but at the same time capable of bringing together a double nature, the more practical one and the one that gives us goosebumps when the road also includes a healthy dose of curves. We have tested the updated version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which still proved worthy of holding the scepter as the best sports car around, refining some aspects especially related to the cabin, yet maintaining a driving dynamics that you will not find elsewhere.
But since it is an already existing model, we decided to assign this trophy to a second car as well – with equal merit of course – and the choice fell on the Ferrari Roma, a completely new project, a grand tourer with incredible speed skills that succeeds to make all the prancing horse know-how available to the driver and expand the range with one of the most sinuous lines that an enthusiast could wish for. The Roma is not only the concept of “nuova dolce vita” according to Ferrari, but the dolce side of the world of cars that are still able to excite, even when parked.

THE CRAZIEST | AUDI RS6
We are sure you would have expected an ultralight sports car, or maybe a supercar with who knows what power/weight ratio. But life becomes complicated for the opponents when the RS6 is in the game and so after having accompanied us on the more traditional commute to work, our road trip on a bunch of French mountain passes at the wheel of the latest incarnation of the performance wagon par excellence proved that Audi does not intend to give up its supremacy. The merit, however, is not only because of the 600 horsepower under the hood, or the incredible torque reserve available, but its’ how the RS6 manages to attack turns, demonstrating a vision of performance on demand that moves the bar incredibly beyond the know limits. It will be really hard for others to do better.

THE SURPRISE | AUDI Q4 E-TRON
Are you surprised? So let us say that the 100% electric Q4 e-tron has not only proved to be a zero-emission SUV that can really be used in any context (city, motorway, dirt roads), but the meeting point for the needs of a motorist for how we enthusiasts intend it and are therefore not willing to compromises that in most cases the electric world brings with it. The Q4 e-tron – also available with Sportback body – is the electric car that represents the best alternative to the Tesla world and that makes you forget recharge anxiety, even without living with an eye on the mileage left.

THE SUV | MASERATI LEVANTE TROFEO
SUVs play an increasingly important role in today’s market and therefore it is obvious that a great deal of our tests concern these sporty-looking cars with a few extra inches off the ground. But what happens if you take the elegant and refined Maserati SUV, sharpen its bite on the ground and engine thanks to the Trofeo makeover (which is also available for the Ghibli and Quattroporte)? The answer is simple: you get the best luxury sports SUV your money can buy. If you then add the sound of its 580 horsepower V8 to the equation, you won’t need many more words.

THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP | Alps Attack
Every trip is an adventure and every adventure is unforgettable, especially if it takes into consideration the car and the right road. Our alpine binge – one of many – in Switzerland, went however beyond the limit of emotionality. We took the Mazda MX-5 100th anniversary over 5 of the most scenic Swiss passes, retracing James Bond’s footsteps on the Furka Pass, attacking the majestic old Gotthard road (the Tremola) and underlining why a light roadster with rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox is all you need to make every bend a special memory. This is the most unforgettable journey of our 2021 and it is all thanks to the fateful alignment of the various factors that made it the perfect adventure.

THE CAR OF THE YEAR | FORD PUMA ST
Usually we do not like to identify a single model that goes above all the other and the reason is because each car has very specific characteristics that define it differently. It is therefore more reasonable that for each category there is a reference model. However, 2021 wanted a car in particular to be able to conquer us and the surprising thing is that it just costs over € 30,000 and has a small 3-cylinder. The Ford Puma ST has thus brought a breath of fresh air, demonstrating that the vast segment of crossovers can also be very interesting for those who want to have fun driving, perhaps with 200 easy to maintain horses, an old school manual gearbox and the practicality of a hatchback that offers more space on board and an analogical driving involvement like the one that made hot-hatches the true heroes of the past decades.
