PASSO DELLA CISA
The Passo della Cisa has played a first order historical role, as a link between Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Liguria, before the motorway networks facilitated travel, especially commercial ones. Today it is mainly traveled by those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, a long stretch full of bends which in its overall stretch connects the cities of Parma and La Spezia. As for the proper bit of road, it is customary to identify it between Berceto and Pontremoli, where the curves mix with large hairpin bends and lead up to an altitude of 1,041 meters, exactly on the border between the Emilia Romagna and Tuscany regions, thus allowing this road to be driven throughout the whole year, without any kind of closure during the winter season.
Location: Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Italy
Type: hill road
Length: 49 km
Elevation: 1,041 meters above sea level
The Passo della Cisa has an almost wild charm, with a fairly wide road but at times in unfortunately precarious conditions, thus leaving a few holes and even some cracked asphalt. With due attention, the Cisa allows to be driven and experienced through a landscape that moves from the heart of the peninsula towards the sea, varying its colors as it reaches the final part of the SS62, with buildings sometimes in a state of abandoned and now worn by time and atmospheric agents, but also with meadows and cultivated fields and the splendid colors of a vegetation ready to wrap the road in its narrowest points. At the top of the pass stands the beautiful Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia, while any self-respecting motorist remember that the 1919 Parma – Poggio di Berceto was the first competition in which a certain Enzo Ferrari took part.
