PASSO DELLE CAPANNELLE
Along the Statale 80 towards the Gran Sasso, we highly recommend that you look forward to the Abruzzo experience along the Capannelle Pass. The pass, although it only reaches 1,300 meters in elevation, is a poem of curves, with mostly wide lanes in good condition. Open to traffic all year round, despite a few sprinkles of snow in the middle of winter, it is one of the most beautiful roads in central-southern Italy and through the approximately 30 km that divide Arischia from Nerito you will have plenty of fun, always satisfying that incessant desire to enjoy the spectacular panorama created by the Apennines. Immersing yourself in the Monti della Laga National Park, the landscape is very changeable and soon leaves room for large meadows that are home to grazing animals and also wildlife that lives in the surrounding woods.
Location: Abruzzo, Italy
Type: mountain road
Length: 9 km ca.
Elevation: 1,300 m
The Capannelle Pass was even used by the Romans as a link between the villages of the Aquila basin with those of the Adriatic shore and for this reason it was the ideal place for attacks by brigands. The Pass owes its name to the numerous small shepherds’ huts scattered throughout the territory, as they too crossed it during the transhumance from the Abruzzo mountains to the green plains of the Roman countryside. The road is rather fast, smooth and flowing and the fact that it is often unjustly overlooked and overshadowed by the more famous Gran Sasso d’Italia, make it an ideal destination if you want to escape some traffic during the summer season.
