PASSO DI MONTE GIOVO – PASSO PENNES
We are in the province of Bolzano, close to the Rhaetian Alps and leaving the fascinating center of San Martino in Passiria behind us, it is time to let ourselves be captured by a journey of about 3 hours that immediately shines once we cross San Leonardo in Passiria. The SS44 begins to take on the appearance of a giant asphalt snake that twists on the mountains, where kilometer after kilometer you are bewitched by a panorama of rare beauty, with a surface in almost always excellent conditions and a very wide and clean road in front of you. A few less demanding kilometers and then we find ourselves face to face with the most scenic part of the Passo di Monte Giovo – just after Innerwalten – reaching an altitude of 2,094 m and continuing towards Casateia, then turning south-east towards Pruno through the SS508.
Location: San Martino in Passiria – Pennes
Type: mountain road
Length: 24km
Elevation: 2.094m (Passo di Monte Giovo) – 2,211 m (Passo Pennes)
The second pass of this itinerary is the higher of the two, that is the Pennes Pass, which with its 2,211 m allows us to reach Pennes, at the end of the tour, but above all to enjoy one of the most uncontaminated and wild roads on which you could possibly drive. Alternating more rocky stretches, with others that offer a wide view above the surrounding valley, the Pennes Pass knows how to make you fall in love from the first kilometers of the climb through the northern side, while on the southern one it also allows you to increase the pace and get to your destination in time for a hot chocolate, in case you choose to come here in early or mid autumn, the time of the year we prefer, with the only unknown factor of possible adverse weather.
