If you think that you’d necessary need a fat wallet in order to get in the garage a sporty two-seater, with a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive and that sounds like a supercar, you are missing the point. With the same amount of cash that will not be enough to buy a daily hatch poorly set up, you have the chance to put your back on a Porsche, the small of the German brand of course, but the S version with a 3.4 6-cylinder boxer engine that delivers 310 horsepower and 360Nm of torque. Needless to emphasize how stupid and useless are the speeches that has long underestimated the Boxster and that now, with the advent of the new 4-cylinder 718 model, prices could rise and this very model will surely find a second life.
We have always knew that, and in fact the Boxster, especially the 987 series, produced between 2007 and 2011 and going through a cosmetic and mechanical makeover, has always been one of our favorite picks, both for its usability on road and track, thanks to an excellent weight distribution, rear-wheel drive and the desire to oversteer, especially when the tachometer needle climbs up and the music becomes more interesting. The roof is canvas and is electrically controlled, giving a fresh and young look to the German multi-faceted sports entertainment device. What about the “double” luggage compartment, the classic one of every Porsche at front, and the one placed behind the engine, useful for a couple of backpacks and jackets, but equally roomy and comfortable in case you want to leave for the holidays. The VW Polo you thought to buy with the same money would not arrive at 274 kph even off a cliff, let alone if it takes 5.3 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 – but what is more important are the emotions that a Porsche is capable of transmitting. Detractors will tell a lot of stories, but the truth is that the Boxster is a Porsche at 100% and knows how to entertain like its bigger sisters, but for a quarter of the price.
