WHERE AUTOMOTIVE BELONGS
Words by Andrea Balti
The “Salone Auto del Valentino” reached its fourth edition, but it’s a bit like the Turin event has always existed. The Piedmont’s city is in fact one of the main hubs for the National and International automotive scene, combining with this exclusive format the extraordinary elegance of the city to the passion for the world of engines, which attract hundreds of thousands of spectators, year after year and with a constant growth in terms of global appreciation. For this edition, despite the uncertainty of the weather in the first two days, over 600,000 visitors and over 2,000 supercars were welcomed to the big show.
The 2018 edition, held from 6 to 10 June, brought with it many interesting models from all the brands that have exhibited their flagship ones along the frame of the Valentino Park, following the fortunate scheme proposed by the Organizing Committee where the cars are really within reach of the spectators and all exhibited through simple structures that make uniform the whole snake of supercars and concept cars present at the event. Like every year, added value has been then created by many gatherings organized by clubs, magazines (including our tribute to the 70th anniversary of Porsche) and the spaces dedicated to car designers, including the great exhibition for the 50 years of Italdesign. Precisely in these terms, the Turin Auto Show identifies a fundamental aspect on which to focus, allowing you to discover authentic talents and take a look into the future of our beloved four wheels.
The spectacular Sunday Grand Prix confirmed its extraordinary involvement, with over 200 modern and vintage dream cars traveling the city center, also cruising for the scenic road that leads to the Basilica of Superga, for about 40 kilometers in total, until the arrival in Piazza Castello, offering to the numerous public an incomparable spectacle. In addition to this, the Wednesday Supercar Night Parade, which saw an accurate selection of dream cars along the illuminated streets of Turin, conducted in some cases by presidents and CEOs of the exhibiting brands. A gem that confirms how much the Turin Auto Show is able to catalyze an entire world in a unique and beautiful spot, making possible to rediscover an enchanting place like the Piedmont capital and its great tradition for automotive.
The involvement has been total and has embraced new and innovative models, but also great classics of the past. Most traditional supercars certainly did not miss the appointment, coloring each square involved in the numerous single-brand get-togethers, such as the one dedicated for Lotus, Alfa Romeo or Lancia Delta. Piazza Castello was instead the focus for the 70th of Porsche and for the historical Car&Vintage meeting, while in the square of the “Castello del Valentino” there were on display the most representative models born from Italdesign’s pencil, an exceptional way to celebrate half a century of activity. And then again the incredible parade of a group of Dallara Stradale, or the show offered by Paolo Andreucci at the wheel of his Peugeot 208 T16 rally car. A party from all points of view and like any self-respecting party, we cannot wait for next year, in order to return to immerse ourselves in this magical event, which unites all the fans and that despite being already on an extraordinary level, it is destined to grow furthermore.
