It is the shock you do not expect, a completely new model that bears the task of expanding the brand’s offer and at the same time reminding the world that Subaru has been an absolute reference point for years in terms of design solidity and mechanical avant-garde. We are therefore talking about its four-wheel drive system that this year equips the cars of the Pleiades brand for 50 years, but also about a renewed partnership with Toyota, with which it shares the entire project and build for this new SUV, destined to change in a profound way the image of Subaru.
The Solterra is in fact the first 100% electric car produced by Subaru and although it may seem like a rebadge of the Toyota bZ4X it is actually a model that has a life of its own due to some small differences that place it in a market segment ready to keep high the interest of those who look for reliability, but also to those younger customers looking for a distinctive look and lots of on-board technology. Compared to the Toyota SUV we have a third driving mode and a more sporty set-up.
Top-of-the-range SUV dimensions, an edgy look and infinite details that make possible a cx of 0.28 (the Forester scores 0.37), with the electric unit positioned in front of the front axle and the batteries arranged on the floor, in such a way as to balance best a total mass of about 2 tons. Ground clearance stands at 210 mm and makes clear that there will be nothing to fear if you intend to use the Solterra as you would with ny other Subaru, while the X-mode will make the most difficult sections a child’s play, also thanks to the new uphill climbing system, adjustable to five different speeds.
Inside it is completely new, with a redesigned steering wheel, a dashboard that thanks to a lowered position increases a perfect visibility all around, while the new infotainment system with a 12.3″ touch display stand out in the middle of the dashboard, together with the wheel of the gearbox, obviously with a single ratio. We were talking about driving modes, which are 3: Normal, Eco and Power, which logically will affect the average distance confirmed at 414 and 465 km. Equipments at the time of the final launch – scheduled for June – will be two: 4E-xperience and 4E-xperience+, both extremely rich in terms of options and active and passive safety. Available with 18 or 20-inch wheels and prices that should start at € 60,000. We tested it in some interesting track and off-road tests, appreciating the incredible dual nature offered by a setting that is at ease on the road and as well as in precarious grip situations, with slopes of 60% and slippery ground. The result? Electrifying and we can’t wait to tell you more.
