Subaru Uncharted | All-New Electric SUV, Driven

With the new Uncharted, Subaru takes another step forward in its electrification strategy without abandoning the qualities that have always defined the Japanese brand. This new battery-electric compact SUV has been developed to combine efficiency and sustainability with Subaru’s traditional strengths in safety, versatility and the ability to tackle demanding terrain. It is a formula that could prove particularly appealing in a market where many electric SUVs prioritize urban usability at the expense of genuine adventure-oriented capabilities.

From a design perspective, the Uncharted features a modern look that immediately conveys strength and robustness. Its compact proportions are complemented by a commanding road presence, thanks to pronounced wheel arches, sculpted body surfaces and generous ground clearance. The front end adopts Subaru’s latest design language, with slim headlights and a distinctive lighting signature that emphasizes the vehicle’s width, while the bumper incorporates protective elements that underline the model’s outdoor-oriented character.

Inside, the focus is on technology and comfort. The dashboard is dominated by a large 14-inch touchscreen display, while the control layout has been designed to ensure ease of use even on longer journeys. Dual wireless smartphone charging, multiple USB ports and an extensive connectivity package are all part of the offering. Interior space is one of the project’s key strengths, providing ample room for both front and rear passengers. Particular attention has also been paid to sound insulation and perceived quality, creating a refined and relaxing environment.

On the technical front, Subaru offers three different configurations. The front-wheel-drive versions are available with outputs of 167 hp and 224 hp, both paired with a 77 kWh battery that delivers a WLTP driving range of up to 592 kilometres. At the top of the range sits the AWD variant, equipped with two electric motors producing a combined 343 hp. Performance is impressive, with a 0–100 kph sprint in under five seconds, highlighting the instant torque delivery typical of electric powertrains.

The all-wheel-drive version is undoubtedly the heart of the project. Subaru has developed a dedicated AWD system specifically for electric propulsion, capable of independently managing torque distribution between the two axles and continuously adapting to changing terrain conditions. The proven X-MODE system and Hill Descent Control are also included, enabling the Uncharted to tackle low-grip surfaces, gravel roads and snow-covered routes with a level of confidence that exceeds the segment average. It is an approach that confirms Subaru continues to regard off-road mobility as a fundamental part of its identity.

DC fast charging of up to 150 kW and a 22 kW AC onboard charger complete a modern and competitive technical package. We had the opportunity to drive the Uncharted in all three of its configurations, both on the road and off-road—including challenging terrain in the AWD version—and found that the high expectations surrounding Subaru’s latest EV have been fully realized. The result is a vehicle that could genuinely become a cornerstone of the brand’s future.
