Supercars Shopping – 5 Reasons Why I Hate The Aventador
5 REASONS WHY I HATE THE AVENTADOR
SUPERCARS SHOPPING
Sent by J.W.
Every day we are at the wheel of extraordinary cars, some more exotic and jaw dropping than others, but we do not want in any way to advertise a brand or another. What we want is just to convey our impressions from the driving seat, those that a car is able to give, the emotions that allow us to live and the blaze that makes us longing for pride and satisfaction for the following day that will see us take a road that fills our hearts with joy. The only soundtrack, the sound of a beautiful engine. Every month many of you write us and send their own experiences – some pieces are regularly released on our website, while others will be part of our new “Supercars Shopping” column, section that thanks to you will allow us to go into the details of specific models, not talking about their technical details, but you rather prefer to tell how it’s in the real world, using them sometimes even on a daily basis and figuring out if these cars are good or not. This is one of your letters, precious words because where a simple journalistic test drive could not be able to do, come into play those who own them, to those who had them or intend to buy and want to outsource their views with us all. Your Words.
I kept this inside me for the past few years and so I decided (be careful I am not a journalist and not even a test driver) to externalize the feeling that triggers when I’m in front of a Lamborghini Aventador. Do you want to know what is it? Deep disappointment.
You can call it a spaceship, yes it has a spatial line with edges for every square centimeter of its body, but the Lamborghini spark I knew it was not ostentatious – here is a little ‘how to go skiing in moccasins, it’s obvious that everyone will look at you, but where is actually finished that flash of genius, the ability to make you fall in love? And do not tell me that I am jealous, I anticipate that I had it and I sold it after two long years. And I say long because I tried in every way to give it a reason, trying to understand that its unjustifiably high price for what it offers (not for what it is) was correct. My rejection towards the last V12 coming out of Sant’Agata has solid foundations since in my family we have a discrete number of supercars. We never disparaged a brand and we, thankfully, bought what we loved. And the Aventador isn’t the first Lamborghini, but it could really be the last. When I was entering the garage it was usually parked next to the Diablo SV and I said to myself – Look how beautiful and aggressive, it had a strong desire to devour the road – and then, after driving it in any circumstances and for several thousands of kilometers I realized it does well what we all take for granted, going fast. No doubt, a 12-cylinder engine with 700hp and four-wheel drive to make things manageable can’t just suck, but someone must have forgotten the emotions factor into the trash. Those emotions that people accustomed to 0-100 in a matter of seconds damn need because, let me tell you, rockets by more than 300 per hour are way spread all over today’s market.
So after just eight months I began to have a bit of hatred for my Aventador and removed the ecstasy triggered by starting its engine cold, I tried to smooth the edges of my discontent, finding only accentuating that anger in me every time I was taking it going to work or for a quiet weekend with just a little fun to drive in mind. Speaking of sound, let’s call a “bonus”, the tailpipe with that extremely cheap chrome mouth at the back … you can’t look at it. But I want to proceed with order or someone may trash my piece (as indeed many would have done already, classic pimps): the cabin could and should look like that of a spaceship, just like its exterior and as long as you observe it in pictures and you do not linger on the details it could seem right. Plastics are hard and worse than those of your grandpa’s Panda, air vents are embarrassing and the central tunnel is acceptable only thanks to “mom Audi.” Surely you can’t ask for more in a € 300 000 car, right? And we’re not talking about a lightweight version or anything else, but the most classic of the Aventador. Overcome the trauma of a use of recycled materials to say the least, I can’t but mention the “fantastic” engineering taken straight from 20 years ago: the single clutch automatic gearbox. Apart from the fact that it is outdated and not at the competitors’ level, it showed signs of fatigue after a few thousand kilometers and at my request for a check I was told that it was a normal and renowned problem. Ouch, and it is also normal that shutter as heavy as trying to disassemble the entire car especially entering lower gears with engine cold … And here comes the third point in the game, which is the bad relationship with the customer, something that is really convincing me that I won’t spend a cent for Lamborghini ever again, especially talking about new models. In this case I will not go into details, as I have already written to them directly and I am still waiting for answers!
Madness – but not Lambo’s madness that we have known in the 70s, 80s or 90s, where they were prey to defects and unreliability, but at the same time be able to give you dream-like experiences. The same Lamborghini, today, would never be able to create a Countach and you can’t certainly blame Audi for that, since they were able to create the Huracan, an exceptional supercar (that I’ll never buy). Now they give us the Veneno, the Centenario … are you serious? It is not that using the pencil as if they wanted to give life to the sick dreams of Otomo San (Japanese cartoonist, ed) starting to create nightmares on wheels, you can call them works of art. But so long as there are investors – and mind they are not chickens, since real investors would buy them even if branded Proton – Lambo will be able to make cash at the end of the month. For everything else, madness, the one that makes you have goosebumps, is now an increasingly distant memory.
I end by returning to the beginning, where I rightly praised performance and for which I wish to state that they are really usable on a fairly fast and wide racing track. The size, weight, all-wheel-wheel and engine play in fact dice with the wrong side of the same coin and on the road the Aventador is uncomfortable and awkward. Then, the moment you’re approaching corners able to wake your most savage instincts, you curse yourself for leaving home the 458 Speciale. But this will not happen anymore, luckily me.
