Too easy to challenge a little and honest utilitarian, knowing that you will smoke it as soon as the traffic light turns green. But there are at least 10 cars that might surprise you and that under a sober and anything but sporty look, hide a few horses more than usual, that once collected your challenge would make you sink into shame. Watch out for these 10! Understating ‘em could cost you your pride.
Audi RS2 Avant: when Audi joined forces with Porsche, the first ever high performance wagon has seen the light. 2.2 5-cylinder and 315hp helped, among the other things, by Porsche 911’s braking system.
BMW M5 Touring: 507 hp and an impressive cargo area in the back.
BMW X6M 50d (and X5M 50d): three turbos and over 700Nm of torque. Who said that diesel SUVs can’t be outstanding?
GMC Typhoon: year 1992 and the Typhoon showed up as one the first wolves dressed as lambs thanks to its 280hp and the ability to handle sports cars of the same period with no effort at all.
HSV Maloo: when you have to bring stuff to the farm in the morning, but racing on track in the afteroon, the HSV Maloo is the car for you. V8 and about 400hp with rear wheel drive and the typical Aussie craziness.
Lotus Carlton: 6-cylinder engine, two turbochargers, 377hp, rear wheel drive with limited slip diff and 6-speed manual gearbox. It’s not magic, it’s the Lotus Carlton Omega.
Mercedes R63 AMG: Merc’s answer to BMW’s M5 Touring, that also goes to satisfy those who want a point of view halfway point between a classic wagon and an SUV. 503hp, 6.2 V8, enough for going from 0-100 in just 5 seconds.
Subaru Forester 2.5: yes, the Forester once offered the STI version with 320hp and a lot in common with the iconic Impreza STI.
Tesla Model S: it’s no more news, but for those who do not already know it, electric power gives maximum torque peak instantaneous, providing the Model S supercars’ performance.
Volvo 850 T5 SW: another high performance wagon. 2.3 5-cylinder with 246hp and 340Nm of torque showing that Volvo was able to make extra safe cars for the family which were also incredibly fun to drive fast.
