What’s The Reason We Mostly Fall In Love With Non-Supercars These Days?

I love supercars, I can’t stay away from them and when I have the chance to drive one and especially keep one in my garage for multiple days of testing, that’s one of the highlights of my working year – for sure. But I’ve also noticed that when it’s time to give back the key of certain press office cars, the ones I miss the most are no supercars at all. Maybe because we all expect thrilling performance out of a €250.000 2-meters wide machine, or maybe because in the real world you can barely use half the potential of a proper sports car, let alone if you have to manage 500 and plus horsepower. After all they say it’s better to go fast with a slow car, than going slow with a fast car – you can start having my point maybe. It’s not about going fast or going slow, it’s about the emotions and the sensations a drive can give you and for sure if you are at the wheel of a Ferrari or a McLaren it will always be an unforgettable experience, but what if we’re talking about a much more honest 300-hp hot hatch, or a lightweight two-seater able to make you feel every imperfection of the road a couple of millimeters from us?
While car makers still focus too much on lap times and 0-100, the truth is that car guys like us just want to enjoy a nice drive in full synergy with the car. We don’t want to be driven by thousands of electronic wizardry that cut the power, help sliding the rear and make hundreds of calculations while cornering. That’s also the reason we love youngtimers, the fact we need some mechanical feedback in our hands, still feeling the clunk of a manual gearbox and worry for dear life if we approach a corner too fast. I’ve been lucky enough to drive all sorts of cars, from hot-hatches to sports sedans, from lightweight weapons to traditional supercars and the likes and even if I loved every single bit of my time spent with 600 or 700 horses rumbling at my shoulders, I firmly believe that the most memorable drives have been with cars you would not believe if I told you. Some examples? We’re going through this in the following episodes.
