Audi Q5 Sportback | Preview Drive
The Audi Q5 now gets the Sportback treatment, thus following the sportier lines introduced with the Q8 and Q3, the latter already in the list with the two versions: SUV (standard one) and Sportback. The dimensions are not a huge difference, with a length of 4.69 meters, a width of 1.84 and a height of 1.66, offering a more youthful and sporty look thanks to the sloping tailgate that sacrifices a few liters as far as luggage compartment concerns, but gives plenty of character to all the engines in the game.
Before moving on to the available engines, it is right to confirm how much the finishes, the assemblies and the multimedia system are always on top levels, with a cabin that can accommodate up to five people and their luggage in the back. Driving dynamics are equally engaging, not only for the cavalry available, but also for the weight, contained despite the fact that the Q5 Sportback is only available in hybrid version and therefore as mild-hybrid (MHEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
The range available at launch therefore includes a wide choice of diesel engines starting from the 163 hp 35 TDI S-tronic, 204 hp for the 40 TDI, 286 for the 50 TDI and the powerful 341 hp of the SQ5 TDI, all mild-hybrid as in the case of the 45 TFSI petrol with 265 horsepower. We then move on to the plug-in hybrid range, which allows you to recharge the battery pack from charging stations and wall boxes, as well as while driving. Here we just have two options to choose from, namely the 50 TFSI e-quattro S-tronic with 299 horsepower and the more powerful 55 TFSI e-quattro S-tronic with 367 horsepower. Both PHEV allow you to travel up to 67 kilometers in 100% electric mode.
We tested the new Audi coupe SUV on the sunny roads around Santo Stefano Belbo, on the occasion of the national launch and between fairytale glimpses and a gastronomic triumph, the Q5 Sportback has proven to be at the forefront for all that if offers, showing itself practical for use on any type of road, spacious and comfortable, without disdaining the desire to step more decisively on the throttle and take advantage of the readiness of the electric motor, always ready to assist the combustion one. The 204-hp 40 TDI is agile in tight stretches, thanks to a lower weight guaranteed by the mild-hybrid system which promises fuel consumption around 6.3/6.9 l/100km in the mixed cycle, but the reactivity of the 367-hp PHE – the 55 TFSI – is truly stunning. It is also important to underline that the thermal to electrical transition is practically imperceptible. Air suspension, specific tuning for the Sportback, is a must have for this car and improves cornering behavior, better managing the extra weight you carry around. Prices start from € 54,250, while you need at least € 62,750 for the PHEVs and € 86,100 for the SQ5.
