WINTER MARATHON 2017
ALIVERTI AND MAFFI ON A 1937 FIAT 508 C WIN THE 29TH EDITION REPEATING THEIR 2015 SUCCESS
After the success achieved two years ago, the team of the Scuderia Franciacorta Motori – gathered for the occasion on a 1937 Fiat 508 C – have won the UBI Banco di Brescia trophy totaling 277 penalty and resisting the fierce competition battling this year in Madonna di Campiglio, traditional classic winter stage for historic cars racing, now at its twenty-ninth edition.
In second place with 294 penalty and after more than 445 kilometers of race and 50 valid stages out of 51 – and 9 challenging mountain passes including Pordoi (m. 2239) and Sella (m. 2240), the team of Andrea Belometti and Emanuele Peli on their 1932 Fiat Siata 508 S Balilla Sport of the Loro Piana Classic Car Team; stable that has been able to get the third place too with Luca Patron and Massimo Danilo Casale (313 penalties) with a 1925 Bentley 3 Litre, the oldest car at the start of this year race. Rounding out the top five, in fourth place Ezio Salviato and Maria Caterina Moglia on a 1939 Lancia Aprilia (320 penalties) and in fifth position, the winners of last year Franco Spagnoli and Giuseppe Parisi on the 1928 Fiat 520 Torpedo with the number 1 on the sides and with 369 penalties overall.
This year too little snow and a constant cold have characterized an issue with a renewed path for more than 40% which has received excellent feedback from participants. The event, officially opened on Thursday, January 19th with the checks at the Savoia Palace Hotel, continued in the evening with the great victory of Alessandro and Francesca Molgora in the APT Trophy played on the frozen lake lit for the occasion; Franciacorta Motori drivers – among the first 32 members and therefore admitted to the Trophy – have prevailed in the final with their 1954 Triumph TR2 on stable mates Lorenzo and Mario Turelli (Lancia Aprilia, 1937) earned a one-week stay for two people in Madonna di Campiglio raffled by the local company for Tourism. Third place for Domenico Battagliola and Catullo Luigi Branca (Fiat 508 S Balilla Sport, 1936) that in the second final beat Andrea Giacoppo and Daniela Grillone Tecioiu (Lancia Fulvia Coupé 1.6 HF 1972).
Friday, January 20 at 14.00 from Madonna di Campiglio the departure of the 106 crews on about 110 registered – most of whom have returned in the early hours of the morning for mechanical problems. Among the “heavy” retreats for the classification we mention the Lancia driven by Lorenzo and Mario Turelli, Salvinelli-Ceccardi (Aprilia, 1939) and Moceri-Bonetti (Fulvia Coupé 1.3 Rallye, 1967); almost immediately out of the competition for a wrong interpretation of the racetrack the Sicilian crew Di Pietra-Di Pietra, one of the main favorites after their third place in 2016. Among the Teams, success for the Loro Piana Classic Car Team, able to place three cars in the top 10; right begind Classic Team and Volvo Club. Gabriella Scarioni and Ornella Pietropaolo win the BST Tubi trophy, reserved for women’s crew, on board a 1960 Porsche 356 B Coupe 160 (outstanding 36th overall in the standings). The best result for the full foreign crew goes to the Swiss Manoel and Aurelie Jolly, for the first time at the start of the race and driving a 1967 Morris Mini Cooper Mk I prevailing over compatriots Roberto Felici and Luca Prencipe on a 1969 Porsche 911 T Targa.
The spectacle of the Winter Marathon kept going on the afternoon of Saturday, with live streaming of the two special trophies on the frozen lake, the first reserved to the pre-war cars entered the competition (Ma-Fra Trophy) won for the third consecutive year by Francesco and Giuseppe Di Pietra on a 1938 Fiat 508 C, while the second to the first 32 drivers in the night race (the new Eberhard Trophy). Followed by so many people who have surrounded the lake for the occasion also thanks to a beautiful sunny day – the Eberhard Trophy has been won by Belometti-Peli. For the same podium three beautiful watches from the Tazio Nuvolari collection were reserved and delivered directly from the President of Eberhard & Co. Barbara Monti at the awards ceremony held in the evening at the PalaCampiglio Congress Centre. On the occasion, with Guido Schittone at the microphone and with the live streaming on Facebook, the Organizing Committee wanted to thank and reward all the official sponsors for the important support given to the event. Next, the delivery of cups and silver trophies to the top 20 in addition to numerous special prizes always provided by the organizers. Then the Porsche Centre Brescia and Porsche Italy itself respectively awarded the first car of the German brand with the crew Peli-Donà on a 1968 911 L and numerous other awards. So we archive the 29th edition and now wait for the following event scheduled for Saturday, April 8th in Castrezzato (Brescia) for the tenth edition of the Franciacorta Historic.
