COL DU GLANDON
COL DU GLANDON
That of the Col du Glandon could be a road that will hardly end up on the maps of the best alpine routes, but fun factor here should not be underestimated, also because it is still about thirty kilometers that offer a fair number of hairpin bends, extremely scarce traffic and the proximity to interesting spots such as the Lac de Grand Maison and the Col de la Croix de Fer. Accessible only from June to October, the Glandon looks like a typically mountainous road that shows off the strong colors of its meadows and the numerous rocky peaks that surround the area.
Location: Saint-Colomban-des-Villards – Lac de Grand Maison
Type: mountain road
Length: 18 km
Elevation: 1.924 m
Starting from Saint-Colomban-des-Villards you drive on the narrowest but panoramic stretch and after a few fast corners and more challenging and rewarding others you reach the top, where there is the possibility to stop thanks to a wide lay-by area and the signs that confirm you have reached an altitude of 1,924 meters. At that point, after a few meters, you can decide whether to continue east towards the Col de la Croix de Fer, or go south-west and reach the crystalline waters of the Lac de Grand Maison, which with its dam offer a wonderful background that preview the dense succession of curves that will continue later on, where at that point you will have a quick connection to the Lautaret and possibly the Galibier.
